SpeakQ & WordQSpeakQ and WordQ are programs that work together to allow a struggling writer to receive help with their writing as they compose. These programs offer the ability to read each letter, word, and/or sentence as it is being written. They also offer the ability to read text from any source to the user. The voices that are offered are very smooth and can help students who are struggling with fluency.
When using WordQ, the user is offered predicted text that would fit into the sentence they are typing. The program also offers relief from the struggles with spelling. SpeakQ offers the ability for students to turn their voice into text so they don't have to be able to type to compose. The various features offered by these two programs, when paired together, are great for students who struggle with fluency, have a hard time composing complete sentences, commonly forget what they were writing about, or who struggle to convey their message coherently. NOTE: This program is not free! There is a cost associated. |
Ghotit.com - Spelling CheckerGhotit is an online spelling checker that allows the user to check their spelling of words while maintaining the context that it is meant to convey. The site uses an algorithm that ensures that the spelling suggestions offered are in line with the context that the word is being used. This site also offers a downloadable add-on, for an additional cost, that integrates this feature as well as a dictionary, text reader, and grammar checker into Microsoft Word. This resource is helpful for students who struggle with spelling as it maintains the context of the sentence when suggesting words, which can be a downfall for most spell checkers. |
VisuwordsVisuwords is a free online visual dictionary that displays various meanings for words in a graphical format. It shows the different forms of the word, and how they are defined in context. This resource is very good for students who are visual learners and who have difficulty deciphering text in a traditional manner. |
FreeMind - Concept MapperFreeMind is a free java-based concept mapping tool. It allows students to create digital concept maps that they can manipulate and design to fit their needs. The program is very flexible and allows the student to print the concept map when they are finished. FreeMind would be a very good tool to use with students who have a hard time tracking their thinking while developing a paper. It would also be good for students who want to move their ideas around to find out where they will fit before creating their writing. It can also be adapted to other subject areas. |
